Location: Groningen, Netherlands

Architect: De Zwarte Hond

De Zwarte Hond was hired by real estate developer MWPO to create a multipurpose and adaptable centre building for the neighbourhood. The project was motivated by the need to better integrate the developing Groningen region and turn it into an engaged social space. On November 2nd 2022, the creative community hub was officially opened.

The SuperHub is an updated circular take on the conventional market hall layout. The building has a cathedral-like appearance thanks to its expansive and translucent design and its cross-shaped laminated hardwood columns and beams that make up the complete supporting framework. Future layout and usage modifications are possible due to the broad span and nine-meter ceiling height, which both produce an extraordinarily bright area. Using graceful columns and net-like wooden trusses, the expansive canopy, which spreads out more than five metres, pulls the structure into its verdant surroundings while providing sun protection. Furthermore, the building is stabilised by intelligently created cross forms, guaranteeing that no additional wind bracing infrastructure is needed. The decision to build with wood also guarantees a favourable effect on the environment.
