Location: Schiphol, Netherlands.

Architect: AECOM + CEPEZED.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is developing a new pier to accommodate rising passenger numbers. The pier is designed by AECOM and lead architect cepezed, and is set to be completed by the end of 2019. The design emphasizes transparency, modularity, and rhythm, and incorporates sustainable materials. The pier will house three security and border zones and function as a mini terminal, accommodating over 20 passenger flows. The gatehouses are unique for Schiphol and can service either one wide body aircraft or two narrow body aircraft simultaneously. The passenger process is designed to be serene and calm, with ample retail and food & beverage areas, and comfortable waiting lounges. The open pier concept aids passenger wellbeing, with large scale plants and trees dotted around the pier’s voids and waiting areas. The pier will achieve a LEED Gold label and incorporate sustainable features such as aquifer thermal energy storage, solar panels, and an intelligent climate façade. Reused or regenerative materials are used throughout the pier’s interior.
