The China Wood Sculpture Museum, designed by MAD architects, is a 13,000 sqm building located in Harbin, China. The museum’s exterior is covered in polished steel plates that reflect the surrounding environment and changing light. The building blurs the boundaries between solid and liquid, referencing the local natural scenery and landscape. The emerging skylights allow in natural diffused illumination to the three halls on the interior. The museum mainly houses local wood sculptures and paintings depicting the ice and snow of the regional scenery. The museum serves as a new interpretation of nature in the context of the large-scale modern urban setting, breaking through the tedium of the urban shell and revitalizing the surroundings with a new cultural feature.
