The design for the SOHO China Group in Guanghua Lu, Beijing, is unique in its closely knit layout, which creates a vibrant urban atmosphere. The complex is connected by a network of passages and overpasses, which crisscross the buildings and connect the surrounding street systems. The dynamic curves of the five buildings are continued in the sloping roofs, which create a “fifth façade” with recessed terraces and open courtyards. The flexibility of the buildings is enhanced by bridge-like connections between the upper floors, which create outside areas for roof gardens with views of the city. The curved pathway system determines the interior of the building complex, which has been designed as an architectural landscape. The glass façades are controlled by vertical louvres, which create a delicate and elegant transparent façade with gently changing waves, imparting lightness to the ensemble.
