Location: Pingshan, China.

Architect: RMJM.

RMJM has designed an urban mixed-use complex in Shenzhen, China, which includes high-standard office buildings, hotels, commercial areas, cultural facilities, and a bus station. The project is located at the intersection of Pingshan Avenue and Sports Road, Pingshan New district. The design focuses on two juxtaposed concepts of ‘Openness’ and ‘Enclosure’. The outdoor spaces face away from the buildings to welcome people into them, while the open, outdoor spaces are situated several stories above street-level, creating a sense of safety and protection from the busy world outside of the complex. The cultural facility located in the centre of the podium buildings will become an eye-catching attraction due to its unconventional shape and special façade material. RMJM came up with a unique visual feature into the project through the concept of ‘Eyes of Pingshan’. The eye-shape ornaments carved in the upper and middle part of the 300-metre main tower create an unusual visual while also appearing to pull back the facade to reveal the building inside.
