Location: Athens, Greece.

Architect: David Chipperfield, Alexandros N. Tombazis & Associates SA.

Following an international competition, the International Evaluation Committee unanimously chose the David Chipperfield Architects Berlin design for the expansion of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens from a shortlist of 10. The plan, which was created in association with Tombazis & Associates Architects, Wirtz International, wh-p Ingenieure, and Werner Sobek, was unveiled on Wednesday, February 15 2023, in front of a press conference with the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The project will enlarge the current neo-classical structure by extending the plinth, a move that preserves the significance of the original museum while generating two levels of subterranean galleries and a raised roof garden.
