The linear two-story buildings, which are part of the King’s Cross development, were constructed in 1850 to handle coal and afterwards used for light industrial, storage, and nightclubs until the late 1990s when they were abandoned. The company was hired to design two bridges to connect the two structures, which were designated for retail in the 67-acre site’s master plan. To ensure the success of the new retail precinct, the studio thought the site required a larger intervention to create a place where people could gather and circulate easily, responding to a changing retail market that is increasingly choosing to create an “experience.” This belief was based on the studio’s experience designing Hong Kong’s Pacific Place shopping mall.
