This nursery project in Yonago, Tottori, Japan focuses on the design concept of “Feel nature, grow sensitivity”. Materials are chosen to make children feel more natural, stimulate their brains, and appeal to their sensitivity and development. Additionally, materials can give children chances to learn their local. The mud of the wall at the entrance and rocks in the gabion surrounding the building are local, the wood used for handrails is Chizu Cedar, the class sign is made of Yumihama Gasuri, and the toilet space is made of stainless steel. Reuse materials from old buildings are used to tell the history of the nursery, and the after-school day care centre is made of floor materials used in the old nursery. These materials have a warmth and make people recall the old scenery, while also teaching children how to take good care of things.
