Hofsos is a small fishing village in the northern part of Iceland with traditional Icelandic houses from the early twenties. The site of the swimming pool is by the coast on the main street leading to the village, offering a magnificent view of the Atlantic Ocean and the island Drangey. The connection to Drangey is of great historical and cultural importance, as one of the most important characters in the Icelandic Sagas, Grettir, swam to this island escaping from a battle on shore. The swimming pool is positioned in an axis facing directly towards the island, giving swimmers the feeling that they are swimming Grettirs route. The building complex contains changing facilities, swimming pool and two Jacuzzis.
The main construction is in situ cast concrete, clad with industrial glazing elements. Icelandic hand-made stones are used as flooring and exterior lighting is minimized to experience the stars and Northern lights.
