The 2016 Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology, or MAAT, is an expansive museum situated in Belém, the region from where the great Portuguese explorers departed, on the banks of the Tagus River. The kunsthalle, a strong yet sensitive and low-slung structure that examines the intersection of modern art, architecture, and technology, offers a new engagement with the river and the larger world. The new structure serves as the focal point of the EDP Foundation’s vision for an art complex that also incorporates the Central Tejo power plant. The kunsthalle is made to allow visitors to stroll over, under, and through the building that lies beneath a softly expressed arch, incorporating more than 7,000m2 of new public space.
