The existing building constructed by Perrin-Fayolle in 1964 has been completely stripped down for a total renovation. The aim of the rehabilitation is to provide Lyon 1 University with a space that meets the functionalities and usage of a contemporary library. The functionality is provided by the creation of large flexible floors, the enlargement of mezzanine floors, and an external circulation tower incorporating public elevators and stairs. The design concept proposes to develop a distinctive atmosphere, diversified spaces, and multiple living areas for students. In contrast to the dark unified space, a color scheme in collaboration with artist Élisabeth Gilbert-Dragic marks the levels in a gradient of greens. The agency’s approach, pushing for the overall coherence of the project, was favored by the trust of users and the client, which led the agency to design custom furniture and provide signage.
