The Georges Pompidou Center, inaugurated in 1977, aimed to be a flexible space for diverse cultural activities, but this proved to be an illusion. Eight years later, a new exhibition space was designed by Gae Aulenti on the fourth floor, with variations in shape and size to reflect the variety of works on display. A longitudinal gallery became the backbone of the museum space, with exhibition units composed of galleries and rooms of various sizes. Transverse galleries with niches, showcases, and bases for sculptures, drawings, and paintings, were designed to make the structural modulation intelligible.
