Location: Dongguan, Guangdong, China

Architect: HENN

As the third mainland location for the City University of Hong Kong, CityU Dongguan will link leading academics and business partners along the Greater Bay Area Technology Innovation Corridor and develop a lively and varied university area in the Pearl River Delta. The 300,000m2 campus, which houses the faculties of science, engineering, business, and medicine, is laid out in a diagonal grid and split in half by a road that runs from the north to the south.

The Spine of the site connects East Campus’s labs, classrooms, dining hall, and media centre with West Campus’s four faculties, athletic complexes, and administrative buildings. The Spines spreads into a sizable plaza that houses the Central Library in the centre of the campus. Residential buildings outline the perimeter of the campus, providing students with convenient housing options and a direct link to the natural setting.

There will be two phases to the project’s construction: The Central Library, a visually arrestingly angular structure with a 50-meter cantilever, will be built as part of the initial building phase and serve as a new landmark for Dongguan. Labs, classrooms, and amenities will be built in equal amounts during each of the two phases to allow for greater flexibility. Phase 01 will be completed in 2023 and Phase 02 is scheduled for completion in 2025.
