The Gallium Valley Science Park project is situated in Hangzhou, China, next to Xihu University and a small river. The design of the project focuses on creating a social environment that encourages communication and creativity among users. The design proposes a new type of office-park typology by emphasizing communal spaces on different levels. The central courtyard, Gallium Square, is the focal point of the project, with a hierarchy of user-oriented open spaces radiating from it. The project features functional and rectangular floorplates that “melt” into communal public realms, creating a system of internal cracks, underpasses, and courtyards. The project includes a diverse mix of programs, such as laboratories, co-working spaces, sports facilities, yoga terrace, gym, swimming pool, meeting places, exhibition areas, library and bookstore, dormitories, shops, bars, and restaurants. The project aims to become a 24-hour city in itself, supporting the work-life balances of 6,000 highly-educated people working in the science industry.
