The 1906 courthouse was renovated and expanded by architect Albert Brenner, a Gustav Gull student. The newly developed duality of object and ensemble reconfigures the environment and establishes a direct conversation between the old and the new structures. The extension’s house-shaped bulk makes constant geometric, spatial, and structural allusions to the original structure. Clay pilaster strips that are vertically linked to provide a separate but discernible continuation of the massive gable roof are an autonomous but textile expression that seeks a dialogue with the old building. A mix of beamed and hourdis ceilings in the previous building’s design is delicately referenced by the wood and concrete construction.
