Location: Albi, France.

Architect: Dominique Perrault Architecture.

The Grand Theatre of Albi is set to transform the surrounding area both in terms of urbanism and cultural influence. The theatre will be the heart of a network of public spaces and cultural facilities, with a “cultural walkway” connecting the cathedral to the public park Rochegude. The theatre’s simple geometry allows it to fit seamlessly into the urban environment, with two new public spaces created around it. The building will be made of concrete and brick, with a copper-red metal mesh “skin” that will protect the theatre’s functions without separating them from the city. This mesh will be adaptable to different spaces and uses, and will create a silhouette that emerges from the city’s rooftops. The theatre will be compact and functional, with direct access for trucks and a back stage, and will include a rooftop garden and restaurant with views of the city. The design aims to create an efficient, flexible, and economical theatrical tool while also providing a vibrant cultural hub for the city.
