Location: 28036 Madrid, Spain
Architect: UNStudio, with b720 Arquitectura and engineers Esteyco
On December 15, 2022 – The design presented by UNStudio, along with b720 Arquitectura and engineering firm Esteyco, was recognized as the successful concept in the competition for the integrated reconstruction of Madrid-Chamartn Clara Campoamor and its urban integration, according to an announcement made by Adif AV.
The proposal by UNStudio, b720 Arquitectura, and Esteyco, dubbed “Open ecosystem,” received the highest possible rating from the jury, which took into account factors like constructibility, accessibility, and integration into the city, as well as environmental sustainability and inclusivity, with the goal of making the Chamartn complex an urban and architectural reference in Madrid.
The historical vaulted roofs of Chamartn station were recognized by the design team as a distinctive and defining feature of the station, and were to be preserved and respected as such. Then, to create permeability with the city, stepped terraces are added. Urban balconies provide views of the station and let the complex blend seamlessly with its surroundings. Therefore, the station acts as a permeable addition to the brand-new parks situated on either side of the complex.
