A new multifunctional complex is being built on the higher bank of the Volga River in Saratov, Russia. The area was previously an industrial zone but is now being revitalized as an important urban public space. The complex will be the first of its kind in the city, offering a range of facilities including a cultural center, conference hall, restaurant, hotel, apartments, and a large multifunctional public space with stunning views over the river landscape. The complex is made up of three parts. The first is a three-storey stilobate that houses the main public spaces, including the hotel reception, restaurant, conference halls, and a large exhibition space. The stilobate has two levels facing the river embankment and three levels at the back filled with technical spaces. The roof of the stilobate is covered with greenery, providing a pleasant view from the hotel rooms and serving as an energy-saving tool. Two towers rise from the green roof of the stilobate, one for the hotel and the other for apartments. The towers are positioned to offer picturesque views over the Volga River and the old city of Saratov. The upper part of the building is a large mixed-use public space with independent service facilities and a perfect connection to the vestibules and technical premises in the stylobate. The facades of the building are made up of a glazing system with sun-protecting and energy-saving glass and one-component metal structures that can be easily recycled. The flow of copper-finished vertical elements begins from the top of the building and becomes a wall of long white and copper lammels when reaching the stylobate. The design also includes an old industrial railway line and a retro freight train locomotive turned into an authentic artwork in the square in front of the complex.
