Benthem Crouwel Architects has won the contract to renovate the Museum Arnhem in the Netherlands. The firm’s design will restore the building’s original structure, with the symmetry of the existing building reinstated. The museum’s location and the building’s characteristics will be emphasised, with the landscape playing a key role in the museum experience. The dome will regain its original spacious character. The new design will also provide views of the surrounding landscape in a variety of ways. The museum will acquire an additional 550m² of exhibition space, a new entrance hall and improved facilities for the public. Building work is due to start at the end of 2017 and the entire renovation will cost over €11m. The municipality of Arnhem intends to award the contract to Benthem Crouwel Architects. Saskia Bak, Director of Museum Arnhem, said: “We are extremely enthusiastic about the vision presented by Benthem Crouwel Architects. It offers scope for superb exhibitions. Moreover, Museum Arnhem will become a wonderful environment and a great place to spend one’s free time. The design will also inspire the museum to do more in the realm of crossover programming. We look forward to enabling our visitors to enjoy the sculpture garden in the winter months as well as in the summer.”
