Huis Marseille, a museum of photography in Amsterdam, has doubled in size with a subtle extension to the neighbouring property. The aim was to connect the two historic buildings without damaging their individual character. The connections between the buildings are minimal and statically positioned to create a natural routing through the museum. The rooms have a subtle colour scheme of different ceilings changing per floor but also referring to the other building. The new retail and office space feature monumental, high-gloss white furniture that supports the space and reflects light. The highlight of the museum is a Louis XIV-style room from the early 18th century, which has been painted in different colours throughout the decades. The choice has been made to bring back the special red colour that was originally used.
