Location: Nokha, Rajasthan, India.

Architect: Sanjay Puri Architects.

In the small town of Nokha in Rajasthan, India, interlocked curvilinear volumes spiral asymmetrically to create a children’s library and a gathering place for the locals.

In the northwest corner, an oddly shaped open area rises up to provide a children’s library and a progressively sloping roof garden. A larger set of curved steps that drop simultaneously create an open auditorium and community space below ground.

The library and open auditorium are located near the northern side of the property, which is shielded from the southern side of the site by an earth berm due to the scorching desert heat of Rajasthan.

The design offers diverse community spaces within this little site of 3678 sq m, with only 180 sq m of the covered area allotted for the library. These spaces are shielded from the harsh desert climate by the way they are set up and offer a variety of possibilities for people to engage in different activities.

It is due to be completed in 2023.
