The PARK+ project aims to repurpose existing structures and features at 254 Ponsonby Road in Auckland to create a unique open space that combines urban and green elements. The project seeks to reflect contemporary values of democracy, inclusiveness, and sustainability through a sequence of interwoven public spaces. The project has been developed through community-led consultation and open competition, and refined through stakeholder consultation and discussion with the local community board and council. The project aims to emerge over time through a choreographed program of intervention, occupation, and event, enabling an ongoing relationship and dialogue with the community and project participants. The project seeks to contribute to the dynamic and ongoing re-invention of Ponsonby, a place of continuous transformation, re-inventing, and re-discovering itself through its rich layers of natural, cultural, and social history. The project aims to create a high-performance landscape and a self-funding governance model that enables a multitude of site occupations and activities and new definitions of park and publicness. The shared design objectives provide a foundation for decision-making, governance, and further design exploration.
