Location: Nantes, France

Architect: Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes

The GTM Ouest and Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes collaboration has been chosen by Nantes Metropole to construct the next Anne-de-Bretagne bridge. The bridge, which will be built atop the existing bridge and heavily planted with flora, will give an area that is up to three times wider. The future university hospital’s tramway will be located there, along with a square, promenade spaces, a garden, soft traffic lanes, and other amenities.

The project will, above all, provide a true public space perched on the Loire, with more than 1,200 m2 of planted area (18% of the total), including a garden that spans the entire 145 m of the bridge. The proposal will save 4,800 t of concrete by preserving the current bridge, which will not be dismantled. The Loire will transport the complete steel frame of the building, removing the need for 200 lorries to circulate. The future Anne de Bretagne bridge is expected to be completed around 2027, with construction set to begin in the second half of 2024.
