The Glass Factory in Shekou was established in 1985 and played a significant role in China’s urbanization development. However, it declared bankruptcy in 2009 due to the financial crisis and real estate downturn. Despite this, the building remained standing and was chosen as the venue for the SZ-HK BI-CITY Biennale in 2013. The main curator proposed the concept of “value factory” to transform the old industrial base into a creative park. This led to the Re-value Factory project in 2016, which aimed to preserve the factory’s collective memories while introducing creative institutes, design studios, brand industries, and young researchers and design firms. The project also included catering, apartment, leisure space, and commercial areas to meet the needs of all users. The goal was to recollect the industrial memories of the past while creating a new cultural and creative industrial park in Shenzhen.
