The construction of Sluishuis was finished in June 2022 after four years of work. There is a brand-new, recognizable architectural landmark in Amsterdam IJburg. The structure connects IJburg and the city centre. Sluishuis is a community with something for everyone, including 442 different owner-occupied and rental homes, a public green roof garden with a rooftop promenade, bird and leisure islands, boat jetties, and catering facilities.
The development of Sluishuis began after the municipality of Amsterdam named the partnership of VORM and BESIX RED the winner of the competitive contract for those projects in 2016. The development group collaborated with Dutch Barcode Architects and the Danish Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) on the design of this distinctive structure.
Living on and near the sea in Sluishuis is contemporary and environmentally friendly. It is a stunning structure with a singular volume that, due to the double cantilever, gives the impression that it is floating on the sea. The cantilevers come together in a tall corner to create a wide entrance from the IJ to the building’s inner harbour. A friendly gesture to the IJburg area is made by adding steps leading to the building’s rooftop and green, welcoming terraces on the other side.
