The Sustainable Singapore Gallery, located within the Marina Barrage building, showcases Singapore’s environmental transformation and educates the public on present and future environmental threats while promoting a more sustainable lifestyle. The gallery is designed as a multi-sensory experience, comprising of text, multimedia content, graphics, models, and interactive exhibits that are coherently narrated spatially. The main exhibition space is anchored by a white “Ribbon” that weaves through the gallery space, functioning as a guiding element that structures the narrative for visitors while simultaneously interpreted as a manifestation of the Singapore River. The Ribbon is facilitated through the use of a proprietary curving profile system for studs, allowing the exploration of organic shapes and elements that enhance the aesthetic experience and narration of the gallery. The spatial shells of the various zones are more regularly-shaped, while receiving vibrant treatment to their surfaces. Various everyday objects and elements that are particularly associated with sustainability, such as PVC water pipes, copper conduits, and recyclable waste, are incorporated as part of the design to amplify the relevant intended messages. The Sustainable Singapore Gallery is a multi-layered experience where architecture, text, and multimedia combine to raise interest and adoption of sustainability by making the gallery especially memorable and relatable to visitors.
