The Tatu City Education Village in Nairobi, Kenya is a flexible and adjustable learning space designed to have a positive impact on social behavior and learning outcomes. The facility includes “learning villages” for various age groups, a multi-purpose hall, and a community gathering plaza. The design principles focus on creating opportunities for social interaction and chance encounters to promote positive social and academic learning. Local materials, such as hand-cut blue stone and timber lattice, are used to emulate the natural Kenyan landscape and revive traditional crafts. The project aims to uplift the community and educate its children, with a focus on community development and local skills development.
