World of Volvo is based on the Swedish idea of “Allemansrätten,” which refers to the fundamental right to nature that all people have: the freedom to move about in any place (public or private) while showing respect for the environment and other people. This principle—which is now more than just a right—is at the heart of the Swedish way of life, permeating all aspects of society, including Volvo.

The arcing “branches” and roof “canopy” are intentional allusions to nature, as the building’s design is based on the concepts of The Mountain (the surrounding area and the building’s foundation) and The Tree (the building itself.)

Three enormous “Trees” that have trunks big enough to house tiny show spaces, vertical circulation, brand exhibition, and service functions are emerging from the mountain. Apart from sculptural staircases (the productive Swedish forest floor) that connect the levels and exhibit artefacts that are scattered throughout the floor, the open space between the trees is generally left unoccupied. By the use of floor-to-ceiling glass façades, the internal area seamlessly transitions into the surrounding, expansive nature.

It is due for completion in 2023.
