The deepest metro stop in Shanghai has undergone a significant renovation. Xing Design redesigned the Metro Line 14 stop at Yuyuan Garden. The firm used the Huangpu River, which runs above the railroad, as inspiration for the spectacular ceiling architecture of the station. It is constructed from tens of thousands of aluminium panels and has an LED lighting system with a range of effects. Without any natural light entering the space, the goal is to create various moods at various times of the day.
The structural complexity of the network’s deepest station required the redesign team to work around columns and other substantial structural components without changing them. The “waves” of the ceiling are said to “lap” the columns.
